TOILETS
We have managed to secure a deal with Leicester City Council’s Acting Allotments Manager to providing finances towards a composting toilet for us. They have agreed to pay approx £6500 towards the project, leaving us with a small proportion to pay.
Planning Application has already been submitted, and all being well, this could be operational in July.
This provides us with an environmentally friendly solution to a long standing problem.
There are specific guidelines in the use of such a toilet, but these will be made available when it is ready.
At long last, there is something solid in the pipeline!!!
Special General Meeting.
We are holding a Special General Meeting on Sunday 22nd June at 11.00. We are proposing to change the rules of Whitehouse Allotment and Garden Society, to enable us to apply for grant funding through a number of sources. At the moment we are prohibited from applying due to certain sections of our rules, which, although acceptable when they were drawn up (1955) are quite unworkable now. They even have a section on Lunatic Members!!
Changing the rules will allow us to apply to Lottery Funding which is one of the largest sources.
Although the proposed rule change is likely to make little difference to any single or group of
members, please feel free to attend.
The existing rules, and proposed rules are available at the meeting, or you are welcome to ask me for a copy.
The Agenda will be with you shortly

BEST KEPT PLOT
Each year the Best Kept Plot Competition is run by Leicester City Council and LAGC, and it is open to all allotment holders. The committee will be looking for the best 3 plots to be put forward for judging which will take place on 8th July.
The presentation takes place on Sept 24th, and a trophy will be awarded to the winner.
TIPS FOR JUNE
June is an important planting out month, rather than a seed sowing one, although successional sowings of Lettuce, French Beans, Radishes and Peas continue. Finish sowing Beetroot Carrots and Swedes.
Vegetables for planting out include Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, Sweet Corn, Winter Cabbage, Capsicum, Cauliflower, Celery, Celeriac, Leeks, Courgettes, Marrows and outdoor tomatoes and outdoor cucumbers. Quite a lengthy list. If you have Asparagus, finish cutting this now.. Begin picking early Broad Beans. Keep the plot watered if a dry spell occurs, and keep an eye out for pest attacks. Keep the floor and staging of the greenhouse to keep a moist atmosphere, and apply shading to the glass.
Try to conserve water by only watering the plant, and not the surrounding ground, weeds need water to survive too…
Try to compost what you can; this will be a valuable enrichment to your soil when it is ready to be dug in. Marrow, Pumpkin and Squash families, amongst others thrive on this.
We have had many enquiries lately, as we are about the only allotment site within the city with vacancies!
Cleared Plots
You may have noticed we are having the rest of the site cleared. Please refrain from dumping any rubbish including your weeds. Please compost all your weeds. Dry out bindweed and twitch, then incinerate them or keep them with any old wood you have for a bonfire on Nov. 5th .
New Members.
Please give our usual warm welcome to our new members.
They are Beverly Peet D12, Lesley Carlton D13, Pete Blackwell D11, Adam Breedon D10, James Dowell, E26, Uritta and Kevin Dube, F12, and Takura Gumunyu F13.
DON’T FORGET THE SCARECROW COMPETITION! £1.00 entry, judged on our open day, with a year’s free rent as the prize.
